You have watched the number go up. Each visit, a slightly stronger pair of glasses, and nobody has really explained why, or whether anything can be done about it.

It is a quiet worry that sits at the back of your mind. You think about thick lenses, about the eye problems that can come with very high short-sightedness later in life, and you wonder if you have missed the moment to do something.

Here is the honest answer: short-sightedness in children can usually be slowed, often significantly, and the best time to start is now. That is exactly what myopia management is for.

Why your child’s short-sightedness keeps getting worse

Short-sightedness (myopia) happens when the eyeball grows a little too long, so distant objects look blurry. In children, the eye is still growing, which is why the prescription keeps changing.

Two things are driving the rise we see in Malaysian children: more near work like reading, homework and screens, and less time outdoors in natural daylight, which research links to slower eye growth.

A new pair of glasses corrects your child’s vision so they can see clearly today. What ordinary glasses do not do is slow the underlying growth of the eye. That is the difference between simply updating glasses and actively managing myopia.

Why it is worth acting early

Higher myopia is not only about thicker lenses. The more a child’s myopia progresses, the higher the lifetime risk of more serious eye conditions in adulthood.

The good news is that slowing progression in childhood lowers that long-term risk. This is why we treat children’s myopia as eye health, not just a sale.

How we slow myopia down

There is no single answer for every child. After a full assessment, our optometrists recommend the option (or combination) best suited to your child.

01

Myopia control spectacle lenses

Special lenses (such as Hoya MiYOSMART, Essilor Stellest, and Zeiss MyoCare) that look like normal glasses but are designed to slow eye growth. The easiest place to start for most children, because it is just a pair of glasses.

02

Ortho-K (overnight lenses)

Custom contact lenses worn while sleeping that gently reshape the eye, so your child sees clearly during the day without glasses, while also slowing progression. Ideal for active children and sports.

03

Low-dose atropine eye drops

A clinically studied eye drop, often used alongside lenses, that helps slow the eye's growth. Prescribed and monitored by our optometrists.

Good to know

Myopia cannot usually be reversed, but in most children it can be slowed significantly with the right management. The earlier we start, the more eyesight we protect.

As soon as a child's prescription is rising, often between ages 6 and 16 while the eyes are still growing. Earlier intervention generally gives better results, so it is worth getting an assessment as soon as you notice the change.

Usually not. Progression can be slowed at almost any stage during childhood. We will measure exactly where your child is and advise honestly.

It depends on your child. Each works well, and they are sometimes combined. We recommend the best fit after a full assessment, rather than a one-size-fits-all package.

We re-measure at every monitoring visit and show you the trend over time. If progression is not slowing as expected, we adjust the plan.
